The chairman of the Penang-based statutory body appeared before the Sessions Court in George Town on Monday to face the allegations, which span multiple counts of misconduct related to public funds. The accused maintained his innocence against all charges brought by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The total amount allegedly involved in the corruption case stands at RM800,000, according to court documents. The charges carry significant penalties under Malaysia's anti-corruption laws, which provide for imprisonment and fines upon conviction.
The case marks the latest in a series of corruption investigations targeting senior officials in Malaysia's public sector. The Sessions Court has scheduled further proceedings to determine the trial date and manage the scope of evidence to be presented by both the prosecution and defence.
The accused remains at liberty pending trial. Legal observers note that such cases involving statutory bodies often draw considerable scrutiny given the public interest in ensuring accountability among officials managing state-linked organisations.
