A feasibility study into a proposed third link connecting Penang Island to the mainland is underway, according to Zairil Khairy Jamaludin, chairman of the state's infrastructure, transport and digital committee.
The proposed crossing would supplement the existing Second Penang Bridge and Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, which handle the bulk of traffic between the island and surrounding areas.
Details of the study remain limited, but state officials indicated that initial findings will be forwarded to the Penang Port Commission for feedback and further evaluation. The port authority's input is considered crucial given the maritime implications of any major infrastructure development in the region.
The third link has been a recurring topic of discussion among Penang policymakers seeking to address growing traffic congestion and support continued economic development. Any new crossing would require extensive planning, environmental assessment, and coordination between state and federal authorities before advancement to the implementation stage.
No timeline for study completion or decision-making has been announced.
