Penang Umno Youth chief distances party from PH-BN cooperation call

The head of Umno's youth wing in Penang has clarified that recent calls for cooperation between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional do not represent the official stance of the party's state leadership.

Hilmi Elias told reporters that Umno's Penang chapter has not held any meetings to discuss or take formal decisions regarding the direction of political cooperation in the state, following remarks attributed to fellow party member Rashidi.

The distinction comes as speculation persists about potential realignments in Malaysian politics at both state and federal levels. Umno, the largest component party in the Barisan Nasional coalition, has faced recurring questions about its relationship with the opposition-led federal government.

Party leaders in various states have adopted different public positions on whether greater cooperation or merger discussions with Pakatan Harapan would benefit the party politically. Hilmi's statement suggests that Penang Umno's direction on the matter remains undetermined pending formal deliberation.
