Penang weighs equal funding law amid budget disparity concerns

GEORGE TOWN — Penang's chief minister indicated the state government is still evaluating a Democratic Action Party proposal to enact a law ensuring equitable distribution of constituency development funds, amid growing concerns over existing budget inequalities.

The proposal would address a substantial funding gap, with some constituencies receiving as little as RM60,000 while others obtain RM500,000 or more in annual allocations. The disparity has prompted calls for legislative measures to standardize funding mechanisms across all state constituencies.

While the chief minister acknowledged the merits of the initiative, he suggested that formal tabling of such legislation remains under consideration. Officials indicated the government is examining the practical and budgetary implications of implementing uniform funding allocations across Penang's constituencies.

The debate underscores broader concerns about equitable resource distribution in state development planning. Proponents of the equal funding law argue that standardized allocations would ensure fair access to public funds for all constituents, regardless of their constituency's current budgetary standing.
