The American multinational beverage giant has acquired Poppi, the prebiotic soda brand founded by Allison Ellsworth, for $1.95 billion. The acquisition marks a significant milestone for the functional beverage sector and reflects shifting consumer preferences toward drinks marketed for health benefits.
Ellsworth launched Poppi in the early 2010s after developing homemade soda formulations to address her own digestive concerns. She initially sold the beverages at local farmers' markets in Texas before the brand gained wider recognition. By the time of acquisition, Poppi had grown to generate over $500 million in annual revenue, establishing itself as a leading player in the prebiotic soda category.
The brand's growth trajectory accelerated following its appearance on the television investment programme Shark Tank, which provided both capital and visibility. Ellsworth subsequently leveraged social media platforms to build brand awareness and cultivate a loyal customer base, particularly among younger, health-conscious consumers seeking alternatives to traditional sodas.
PepsiCo's acquisition of Poppi aligns with the beverage sector's broader strategic repositioning toward functional and better-for-you drink categories. The purchase expands PepsiCo's portfolio beyond conventional carbonated soft drinks and strengthens its presence in the rapidly expanding prebiotic and digestive health beverage market.
