Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare and devastating neurological disorder, may be triggered or accelerated by inflammatory processes occurring outside the central nervous system, according to findings from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore.
The research team's investigation into the mechanisms underlying PSP revealed that peripheral inflammation—inflammation affecting tissues and organs outside the brain and spinal cord—appears to play a significant role in driving the neurodegeneration characteristic of the condition. This discovery challenges previous assumptions about the disease and suggests that systemic inflammatory markers could serve as early warning indicators.
PSP is a progressive movement disorder that typically manifests in patients over 60 years of age, causing difficulties with balance, eye movement, and cognitive function.
