Peripheral neuropathy affects 1% globally, 10% among elderly: experts

Around 200 doctors, neurologists and faculty members from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana attended the Lalitha CME Series on 'Advances in Peripheral Neuropathy', organised by the Lalitha PVS Institute of Medical Sciences in Guntur, to discuss emerging treatment approaches and diagnostic methods.

According to medical experts at the conference, peripheral neuropathy affects approximately 1% of the general population globally. However, the prevalence increases substantially among older age groups, with the condition affecting around 10% of individuals over the age of 60 years.

Peripheral neuropathy, which involves damage to peripheral nerves affecting sensory and motor functions, represents a significant clinical challenge in geriatric populations. The condition can result from various causes, including diabetes, infections, injuries, toxin exposure and inherited conditions.

The continuing medical education initiative underscores the need for greater awareness and understanding of neuropathic conditions among healthcare practitioners in the region. With an ageing population, medical professionals say there is an urgent need to enhance diagnostic capabilities and treatment protocols for managing peripheral neuropathy effectively.
