Sarawak's vendor community has received a substantial economic injection through Petronas contract awards totalling RM2.68 billion, according to Deputy Premier Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. The distribution among 300 local suppliers represents a significant stride in developing the state's industrial base and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises in the energy sector.
The initiative reflects broader efforts by major industry stakeholders to strengthen local participation in Sarawak's oil and gas value chain. Sarawak Energy, state-owned investment firm Petros, and Petra Energy have all been instrumental in backing local companies through vendor development initiatives and procurement programmes, Deputy Premier Awang Tengah said.
The contract awards align with Malaysia's wider push to develop domestic supply chains and ensure greater local content in resource-based industries. For Sarawak, the move is expected to create employment opportunities and encourage business growth among smaller suppliers serving the petroleum sector.
The vendor development approach has become increasingly central to Petronas and its partners' operational strategy in the state, as they seek to build a more resilient and locally-rooted industrial ecosystem around energy production and related services.
