Petronet LNG pushes Qatar for early cargoes as supply disruptions mount
India's largest liquefied natural gas importer is seeking accelerated deliveries from Qatar to offset significant supply shortfalls caused by force majeure disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The company received just six of the 75-80 expected cargoes between March and October 2026.

Petronet LNG Ltd is engaging with its Qatari suppliers to expedite cargo shipments as geopolitical tensions continue to disrupt energy flows through critical maritime chokepoints. The company had anticipated receiving 75-80 LNG cargoes during the March-October 2026 period but managed to receive only six consignments, leaving a substantial gap in its contracted supply schedule.
The shortfall has been attributed to force majeure events affecting shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which a significant portion of global LNG supplies transit. The disruptions have prompted Petronet to initiate discussions with Qatar's LNG producers to explore options for accelerating future deliveries and compensating for the lost volumes.
Despite the supply challenges, Petronet LNG reported stronger financial performance during the period, with net profit climbing 54 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter. The improved earnings reflect higher LNG margins and operational efficiency gains at its regasification terminals across India.
The supply crunch underscores the vulnerability of India's LNG import strategy to geopolitical disruptions along key maritime corridors. Petronet, which operates most of India's LNG import capacity, has been strengthening its supplier relationships and exploring alternative sourcing strategies to enhance supply resilience and meet the nation's growing energy demands.
