PFRDA explores guaranteed pension schemes amid finance ministry discussions

The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) is exploring the introduction of guaranteed pension plans as it seeks to expand product offerings within India's regulated pension ecosystem. The regulator is currently in discussions with the finance ministry to finalize the framework for such schemes, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Guaranteed pension plans would provide subscribers with assured returns or pension payouts, a departure from the performance-dependent nature of existing pension fund schemes. Such products are expected to appeal to risk-averse investors seeking certainty in retirement income.

A key component of the PFRDA's proposal involves securing access to derivative instruments. Officials view derivatives as essential tools that would enable pension fund managers to hedge risks and stabilize returns, thereby making guaranteed pension schemes economically viable for fund operators.

The move reflects broader efforts by Indian financial regulators to modernize the pension sector and attract greater participation. The National Pension System, overseen by the PFRDA, has been expanding its product suite in recent years to cater to diverse investor preferences and retirement planning needs.
