PH eyes 30 rain basin sites to combat Metro Manila flooding
The government has identified 30 locations across the National Capital Region where large rain-catchment structures can be constructed to alleviate chronic flooding problems. The sites were pinpointed by Dutch engineering firm Haskoning as part of efforts to address the capital region's persistent flood challenges.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that 30 strategic sites have been identified for the development of major rain-catchment infrastructure across Metro Manila. The assessment was conducted by Haskoning, a Netherlands-based engineering consultancy with expertise in water management and flood prevention systems.
Among the proposed locations are prominent venues including Plaza Rajah Sulayman and Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Malate. These sites were selected based on their geographical and structural suitability for constructing large-scale rainwater retention facilities that could help manage excess water during heavy downpours.
The initiative represents part of a broader strategy to address the National Capital Region's longstanding vulnerability to flooding during the monsoon season and typhoon events. Large rain basins function by capturing and storing excess stormwater, reducing the volume of water that enters drainage systems during peak rainfall periods.
The identification of these sites follows years of damaging floods that have displaced thousands of residents and disrupted business activities across Metro Manila. Officials have indicated that the proposed rain-catchment structures could significantly reduce flood risk in vulnerable communities throughout the capital region.
