BAGUIO CITY — Approximately 400 underground and surface workers at Philex Mining Corp.'s Padcal mine in Tuba, Benguet, launched a strike on October 11 after collective bargaining negotiations with company management collapsed.
The work stoppage commenced between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. during the first shift, bringing operations at the mine to a halt. The strike followed a breakdown in talks between the mining firm and the workers' union regarding compensation and working conditions.
The Philippines' mining sector has faced recurring labor disputes as workers press for improved wages and benefits amid volatile commodity prices and operational challenges. Philex Mining is one of the country's major precious metals producers, operating the Padcal mine as a significant revenue generator for the region.
Authorities and labor officials have not yet issued statements regarding efforts to mediate between the company and striking workers. The impact of the work stoppage on production timelines and company operations remains to be determined.
