MANILA — The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has retired its last remaining UH-1H helicopters, bringing to a close a significant chapter in the service's operational history. All six aircraft were formally decommissioned on Thursday at a ceremony at Brig. Gen. Benito Ebuen Air Base, according to PAF spokesperson Col. Alvin Jay Capinguian.
The iconic Huey helicopters had remained fully operational until their retirement, serving the Philippine Air Force for decades in various capacities. The aircraft were instrumental in conducting transport missions and responding to humanitarian and disaster-relief operations throughout the country.
The decommissioning reflects the PAF's ongoing modernization efforts, with Black Hawk helicopters progressively taking over the roles previously handled by the aging Huey fleet. The transition represents a significant upgrade in the service's aerial transport and response capabilities, providing newer aircraft with improved range, payload capacity, and technology.
The retirement of the Huey helicopters signals the PAF's continued push to refresh its aging inventory and enhance its operational readiness. The service has been gradually acquiring newer platforms to replace its legacy aircraft as part of its broader modernization program aimed at strengthening the country's defense capabilities.
