Philippine Coast Guard evacuates residents as monsoon rains swamp Mindoro towns
The Philippine Coast Guard has launched preemptive evacuations in two Occidental Mindoro municipalities as the southwest monsoon brings heavy rainfall to the region. Residents from flood-prone areas in Paluan and Sablayan were relocated to higher ground as water levels rose across low-lying communities.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) initiated evacuations in the Occidental Mindoro towns of Paluan and Sablayan on August 18 as intensifying monsoon rains triggered flooding in susceptible areas. Residents from low-lying barangays in Paluan, including communities in Barangays 1, 6, and 10, were moved to safety as a precautionary measure.
The action was taken to protect residents from the rising waters brought by the southwest monsoon system affecting the region. The PCG coordinated the relocation efforts to ensure the safety of families living in areas historically vulnerable to flooding during heavy rainfall events.
Sablayan was also included in the evacuation operations, with authorities prioritizing communities at greatest risk. The preemptive measures aimed to avert potential casualties and property damage from anticipated flood conditions in the coming hours.
The evacuations underscore ongoing concerns about seasonal flooding in Occidental Mindoro, where heavy monsoon rains regularly inundate low-lying settlements. Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and water levels across the affected municipalities as the southwest monsoon persists in the region.
