Philippine Daily Inquirer wins top award for debt crisis coverage

MANILA — The Philippine Daily Inquirer has won the Best News Coverage award at the 48th Catholic Mass Media Awards for its in-depth investigation into the country's mounting debt crisis.

The award-winning series comprised two reports: "Debt service eats up biggest slice of budget pie" and "PH debt stock projected to hit P19T by end of 2026." The investigations, authored by Krixia Subingsubing and Nyah, provided detailed analysis of how debt obligations are straining government finances and the projected trajectory of the nation's debt load.

The Catholic Mass Media Awards, now in its 48th year, recognizes excellence in journalism and media coverage across the Philippines. The Inquirer's recognition underscores the growing significance of reporting on fiscal issues affecting Filipino citizens and policymakers.

The award highlights the importance of investigative journalism in examining critical economic challenges facing the nation, particularly as government debt servicing continues to compete with spending priorities in healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.
