Philippine employment rises but wage concerns persist, labor groups warn
August employment figures show improvement in the Philippines with declining unemployment and underemployment rates. However, labor advocates are raising alarm about job quality and workers' ability to afford basic necessities.

Employment in the Philippines increased during August as the jobless rate fell and underemployment declined, according to latest government data. The improvement marked a positive trend in the country's labor market over recent months.
Despite the headline gains, major labor coalitions have cautioned that the numbers mask deeper structural problems. Sentro ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa, a prominent labor federation, highlighted concerns that many of the new jobs being created do not meet standards for decent work.
The group stressed that employment growth alone does not address worker welfare, pointing to stagnant wage levels that fail to keep pace with living costs. Labor representatives argued that without improvements in compensation, many Filipinos will continue struggling to meet daily expenses despite being employed.
Advocates are calling on policymakers to focus not merely on reducing unemployment figures, but on ensuring quality employment opportunities with wages sufficient to support workers and their families. The debate underscores growing tension between aggregate labor statistics and the lived experience of ordinary Filipinos in the workplace.
