Philippine lawmaker seeks ban on goods made through forced labor

MANILA — Albay Representative Raymond Adrian Salceda has called on fellow House members to endorse a bill restricting the entry and sale of merchandise produced through forced labor in the Philippines.
In remarks made Tuesday, Salceda emphasized that international trade obligations must not supersede fundamental human rights protections. The measure addresses concerns over supply chains connected to labor exploitation practices worldwide.
The proposed legislation targets both direct imports of forced-labor goods and products containing components manufactured under such conditions. Salceda argued that Philippine consumers and businesses should not inadvertently support industries that profit from worker exploitation.
The bill represents an effort to align Philippine trade policy with international standards against forced labor. Supporters contend that implementing such restrictions would strengthen the country's commitment to labor rights while maintaining competitive trade relationships with partner nations.
