Philippine lawmakers seek inquiry into mining operations on Sibuyan Island

CALAPAN CITY — Progressive lawmakers have formally requested a congressional inquiry into mining activities conducted by Altai Philippines Mining Company on Sibuyan Island, a key ecological area in Romblon province.

The move came as House Resolution No. 1437 was introduced on Wednesday by representatives from the Kabataan Party-list and Gabriela Women's Party, both members of the opposition Makabayan Bloc. The resolution seeks to examine the scope and environmental impact of the company's mining operations in the region.

Sibuyan Island, located in the central Philippines, is known for its biodiversity and ecological significance. The filing of the resolution reflects growing concerns among lawmakers regarding resource extraction activities in environmentally sensitive areas.

The congressional inquiry, if approved, would examine the company's mining permits, operational practices, and compliance with environmental regulations. It would also assess potential impacts on local communities and marine ecosystems surrounding the island.

The resolution has been referred to appropriate House committees for review and consideration.
