The push for stronger protections underscores concerns about the country's media environment. The Philippines currently ranks 114th in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders, reflecting persistent challenges facing the journalism community.
The CHR and PTFoMS stressed the importance of ensuring journalists can operate without fear of harassment, intimidation, or violence. Officials emphasized that a free and independent press is essential for democratic governance and public accountability.
