Philippine schools suspend classes as southwest monsoon batters Metro Manila

MANILA — Schools throughout Metro Manila suspended face-to-face instruction on Saturday, Aug. 29, in response to deteriorating weather conditions brought by the southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat.
The suspension affected multiple cities within the metropolitan area, including Manila City and Caloocan City, where both public and private educational institutions were ordered to cease in-person classes. In place of classroom sessions, schools directed students and faculty to transition to alternative delivery methods, including online classes and remote instruction.
The southwest monsoon, which typically brings moisture-laden winds from the Indian Ocean, has intensified rainfall across the capital region, prompting local government units and the Department of Education to prioritize the safety of students and school personnel.
Education officials have advised schools and parents to monitor weather updates and further advisories as the monsoon system continues to affect the area. Students are expected to resume regular classes once conditions improve and local authorities lift the suspension orders.
