Philippine schools suspend classes as southwest monsoon intensifies
Classes are cancelled in several areas across the Philippines on Thursday as the southwest monsoon brings heavy rainfall and rising water levels to key regions. The suspensions affect students in Laguna and Pampanga provinces.

Educational institutions in Laguna and Pampanga provinces will remain closed on Thursday, August 20, as the southwest monsoon continues to impact weather conditions across the country.
The class suspensions come as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported rising water levels at monitored dam facilities. Data from the past 24 hours showed that eight of nine monitored dams recorded increases in water levels, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures.
The southwest monsoon, locally known as the Habagat, typically brings heavy rains and strong winds to the western portions of Luzon and the Visayas. Students, teachers, and school personnel in affected areas are advised to monitor official announcements for updates on the suspension status and plans for class resumption.
Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and water levels as the monsoon season persists. Residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols issued by local government units.
