Philippine tennis federation seeks WTA waiver as Eala prioritises Asian Games

The Philippine Tennis Association has formally requested a waiver from the Women's Tennis Association to permit Alexandra Eala to skip the China Open, a prestigious WTA 1000 event, in favour of competing at the Asian Games.

Eala, the Philippines' leading female tennis player, faces a conflict between the mandatory professional circuit competition and the regional multi-sport Games. WTA rules require top-ranked players to compete in a certain number of elite tournaments each season, with absence from mandatory events resulting in ranking point deductions.

The federation's appeal seeks to exempt Eala from the typical penalty structure, arguing that competing for her country at the Asian Games represents an exceptional circumstance warranting special consideration. The decision underscores the tension athletes sometimes face between pursuing world rankings and representing their nations at major regional sporting events.

The WTA has not yet publicly announced its decision on the Philippine federation's request. The China Open is scheduled during the same period as the Asian Games tennis competition, making simultaneous participation impossible for Eala.

The outcome could set a precedent for how tennis governing bodies handle national team obligations in relation to professional ranking requirements.
