Philippines approves jeepney fare increases, effective end of September

MANILA — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has given the go-ahead for fare increases affecting jeepneys and other public utility vehicles (PUVs) operating across the Philippines. Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez endorsed the recommendation submitted by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), clearing the way for fare adjustments to take effect on Monday, September 28.

The LTFRB had previously recommended lifting a suspension on fare hikes, paving the way for the increases to be implemented. The move comes amid ongoing discussions about operational costs and transportation affordability in the country.

Jeepneys remain a vital part of the public transportation system in the Philippines, serving millions of commuters daily across urban and provincial routes. The fare adjustment represents the latest in a series of changes to public transport pricing as authorities balance the needs of operators with concerns about commuter expenses.

Commuters are advised to expect higher fares when boarding public utility vehicles from the effective date onwards. The DOTr and LTFRB are expected to provide detailed information regarding the specific fare increases across different routes and vehicle types.
