MANILA — The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) on Friday issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) directing aircraft to avoid flying near Mayon Volcano following volcanic activity recorded the same day.
The advisory was prompted by a moderately explosive eruption that ejected a grayish ash column approximately 3,000 meters above the volcano's summit. The NOTAM alerts pilots to the hazardous conditions in the vicinity of the Bicol Region volcano and provides guidance on safe flight corridors.
Mayon Volcano, one of the Philippines' most active and distinctive peaks, has experienced periodic eruptions throughout its geological history. The CAAP's flight restriction is a standard precautionary measure implemented to protect aircraft and passengers from volcanic hazards, including ash ingestion into engines and reduced visibility.
Aviators operating in airspace near Mayon are advised to monitor official CAAP bulletins for updates on volcanic activity and flight restrictions. The aviation authority continues to coordinate with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) for real-time monitoring of the volcano's status.
