Philippines braces for cooler December, January despite strong El Niño

Residents throughout the Philippines can anticipate cooler weather during December and January, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Thursday, despite predictions of a robust El Niño event extending from October 2026 through the first half of 2027.

The weather phenomenon will bring typical year-end cooling to Northern Luzon and other areas of the country, providing temporary relief from elevated temperatures even as the broader El Niño pattern develops across the region, according to Pagasa officials speaking in Calasiao, Pangasinan.

El Niño conditions are associated with warmer ocean temperatures and typically produce drier conditions across Southeast Asia. However, the agency indicated that seasonal cooling mechanisms during the Northern Hemisphere winter months will still generate cooler temperatures in Philippine locations during the coming months.

The forecast underscores the complexity of weather patterns during transitional seasons, when multiple climatic factors influence local conditions. Filipinos should monitor regular Pagasa updates for detailed regional forecasts as the year progresses, officials advised.
