Philippines braces for extended monsoon rains, tropical storm threat

MANILA — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported that the southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, will continue to affect the archipelago, bringing sustained moisture and rainfall to affected regions.

In a weather advisory issued Thursday evening, Pagasa weather specialist John Manalo noted the presence of a low-pressure area situated approximately 850 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon. The system poses a potential threat for tropical cyclone development, which could intensify the weather conditions experienced across the country.

The continued influence of the southwest monsoon is expected to maintain wet conditions over the western portions of the Philippines, with the emerging low-pressure system adding to precipitation forecasts. Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to monitor subsequent weather updates from the state weather bureau as the situation develops.

Pagesa has not yet confirmed whether the low-pressure area will develop into a named tropical cyclone, but residents are urged to prepare for potential heavy rainfall and flooding risks in coming days. The agency is expected to issue further advisories as the system evolves.
