Philippines braces for heavy rainfall as weather systems intensify monsoon

The state weather bureau warned Tuesday that western regions, including Metro Manila, face persistent heavy rains through the week as a tropical depression and low-pressure area strengthen the southwest monsoon.

MANILA — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued advisories for heavy rainfall across western portions of the archipelago, with the weather disturbances expected to remain active through the remainder of the week.

Two separate low-pressure systems are combining to enhance the southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, according to the bureau's Tuesday briefing. The interaction between these weather features is drawing moisture-laden winds toward the country's western seaboard, creating conditions conducive to prolonged and intense precipitation.

Metro Manila and surrounding areas in the western region face particular concern as the enhanced monsoon system channels significant moisture into the region. Residents and local government units have been advised to prepare for potential flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas as rainfall accumulates throughout the forecast period.

The weather bureau urged residents to remain alert and monitor official updates as the system develops. Motorists were cautioned to exercise extra caution on roadways that may be affected by pooling water or reduced visibility, while property owners in low-lying communities were advised to take necessary precautions against potential flood impacts.
