MANILA — A brief respite from heavy rains is forecast for Sunday as the southwest monsoon weakens, though conditions are expected to deteriorate again within days, according to the state weather bureau.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) indicated that lighter precipitation may develop on Sunday, Sept. 6, providing temporary relief for affected areas. However, forecasters cautioned that the monsoon system, locally known as the habagat, will likely intensify once more as the week progresses.
Daniel Villamil, a Pagasa weather specialist, relayed the advisory during the bureau's 5 p.m. briefing, noting the potential for renewed heavy rainfall in the coming days. The forecast reflects the typical pattern of the southwest monsoon system, which can bring periods of variable conditions before concentrating its effects again.
Residents and local government units are advised to monitor weather updates closely and maintain preparedness measures, as Monday and subsequent days could see a return to heavier downpours that may pose flooding and landslide risks in vulnerable areas.
