Philippines braces for up to four cyclones through April 2027

MANILA — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) warned Wednesday that the country faces an increased threat from tropical cyclones through April 2027, with forecasters expecting two to four systems to develop in or enter the Philippine area of responsibility during this period.

The projection was presented at a climate forum organized by Pagasa, as meteorological authorities assess seasonal weather patterns shaped by ongoing El Niño conditions. The El Niño phenomenon, characterized by warmer-than-normal ocean temperatures across the equatorial Pacific, can influence tropical cyclone activity across the region.

Authorities did not specify which months would face the greatest cyclone risk, though the six-month window encompasses the traditional typhoon season that peaks during the latter half of the year. Pagasa's guidance typically informs disaster preparedness planning at national and local government levels.

The forecast underscores the importance of enhanced monitoring and preparation as the country navigates the dual challenge of El Niño-driven weather patterns and cyclone season. Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to remain alert to official weather updates and heed guidance from local disaster management authorities.
