MANILA — The completion timeline for the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) has been extended by one year as the Philippine government implements fiscal restraint measures across infrastructure projects. Palace Spokesperson Claire Castro announced Thursday that the full operational launch has been rescheduled from 2032 to the third quarter of 2033.
The adjustment received approval from the Economy and Development Council (EDC), the country's highest economic policy-making body chaired by President Marcos, during its Wednesday session. The delay reflects broader budgetary constraints that have prompted officials to reassess spending priorities across major capital projects.
The NSCR, which will connect Metro Manila's northern and southern regions, remains a key component of the government's infrastructure modernization agenda. The railway project has faced multiple schedule adjustments since its inception, with implementation extending over several years.
The revised timeline allows the administration to balance its commitment to infrastructure development with fiscal discipline as it manages the national budget. Officials have not disclosed specific details regarding cost reductions or adjusted project phases resulting from the postponement.
