MANILA — The Human Organ Preservation Effort of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (HOPE-NKTI) is urging Filipinos to consider becoming organ donors as the country faces a critical shortage of kidneys for transplant patients.
More than 500 individuals across the Philippines are currently waiting for kidney transplants, according to Dr. Anthony Russel Villanueva, head of HOPE-NKTI. The institute has intensified efforts to boost public awareness about the life-saving importance of organ donation and to encourage Filipinos to register as donors.
The gap between supply and demand for donor organs remains a persistent challenge in the country's healthcare system. Medical professionals say that increasing the number of registered organ donors is essential to reducing wait times and improving survival outcomes for patients with end-stage renal disease.
HOPE-NKTI continues to work with hospitals and community organizations to educate the public about the organ donation process and to simplify registration procedures for prospective donors.
