MANILA — A collaborative research effort has uncovered a potential uranium deposit in Camarines Norte, marking a significant development for the Philippines' nuclear energy aspirations, the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) announced Friday.
The discovery was made by researchers from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, the Department of Science and Technology's PNRI division, and Japan's Akita University. The team's identification of the resource suggests opportunities for domestic uranium sourcing that could support future nuclear power generation in the archipelago.
The finding comes as the Philippines continues to explore low-carbon energy options to meet growing electricity demand while working toward climate commitments. Nuclear energy has been identified as a potential component of the country's long-term energy mix.
