Philippines imposes three-month sardine fishing moratorium in Sogod Bay

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) announced the three-month moratorium on sardine harvesting in Sogod Bay, which will remain in effect through the end of February. The measure is designed to allow fish populations to recover and reproduce during the critical breeding season, officials said.

The closure represents part of BFAR's broader annual conservation strategy aimed at maintaining sustainable fishery levels across the region. Southern Leyte, a major fishing area in the Visayas region, has experienced pressure on its sardine stocks due to commercial and subsistence harvesting.

Local fishing communities in Tacloban and surrounding areas have been notified of the temporary ban, which is expected to help restore spawning populations and ensure long-term viability of the sardine fishery. Officials did not specify penalties for violations of the closed season during the announcement.
