MANILA — Two hundred thirty public school employees have been selected to receive scholarships under the Learning Initiatives for Nurturing Guidance Associates and Counselors Program, commonly known as Lingap, as the government moves to address a critical shortage of school mental health professionals across the country.

The initiative, a collaborative effort between the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education, will equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to serve as guidance counselors in public educational institutions. The program represents a targeted response to longstanding gaps in student mental health services that have been exacerbated in recent years.

The first cohort of scholars, drawn from existing public school personnel, will undergo specialized training through the Lingap program. Upon completion, these individuals are expected to return to their respective schools and communities to provide essential counseling and mental health support services to students.

The scholarship initiative underscores the government's commitment to strengthening the country's education system and prioritizing student welfare. By developing guidance counselors from within the existing pool of public school staff, the program aims to create sustainable solutions to mental health service gaps while building local capacity throughout the education sector.
