Philippines logs 6,253 leptospirosis cases through late August
The Department of Health reported leptospirosis cases have reached 6,253 as of August 29, marking a 12 percent decrease compared to the same period last year. Health officials are urging Filipinos to take precautions against the disease.

MANILA — The number of leptospirosis infections documented across the Philippines has climbed to 6,253 as of August 29, the Department of Health reported. Despite the rising caseload, the figure represents a 12 percent improvement over the corresponding period in 2023.
During a press briefing, Health Undersecretary Dr. Gloria Balboa reiterated warnings to the public about preventive measures against the disease. Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated water and soil, typically spreads during heavy rains and flooding.
The DOH undersecretary cautioned citizens against wading through floodwaters and standing bodies of water that may harbor the bacteria. The disease poses particular risks during typhoon season when flooding becomes prevalent across much of the archipelago.
Officials continue monitoring leptospirosis trends as the country moves through the peak rainfall months. The health department recommends vaccination, proper sanitation, and immediate medical attention for suspected cases to prevent complications.
