Philippines' Mayon Volcano erupts with ash column towering 3km high

The eruption of Mayon Volcano sent a significant ash column skyward, with the plume reaching heights of around 3,000 metres above the volcano's summit. The brief but forceful eruption lasted nearly six minutes, during which ash dispersed across surrounding areas.

Located in Bicol region on the island of Luzon, Mayon is among the Philippines' most frequently active volcanoes, known for its distinctive cone shape and volatile behaviour. The volcano has a history of both minor and major eruptions, keeping authorities and nearby communities on heightened alert.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has been monitoring volcanic activity at the site. Residents in communities near the volcano remain subject to hazard assessments and evacuation protocols depending on alert level designations issued by authorities.

The eruption comes as the region continues to experience periods of volcanic unrest, with monitoring systems in place to track any escalation or changes in activity patterns at the crater.
