Philippines needs P7.7 billion to repair storm-damaged schools

The Department of Education (DepEd) estimates it will require P7.783 billion to repair classrooms and school facilities damaged by successive weather disturbances affecting the Philippines. According to the agency, over 11,000 classrooms nationwide have sustained damage from flooding triggered by the southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, combined with the impact of recent tropical cyclones.

The rehabilitation budget includes P65.036 million allocated for immediate cleanup and clearing operations at affected facilities. DepEd officials indicated that the comprehensive funding requirement accounts for structural repairs, facility restoration, and other remedial measures necessary to restore learning environments across multiple regions.

The damage to school infrastructure has raised concerns about potential disruptions to the academic calendar and learning continuity for Filipino students. Education officials have prioritized the rapid assessment and rehabilitation of the most severely affected facilities to minimize educational gaps.

The agency is expected to coordinate with the national government and relevant agencies to mobilize the necessary resources for reconstruction efforts. Officials have appealed for swift approval of the funding request to expedite repairs and ensure schools can resume full operations.
