Philippines needs powerful navy to protect seafarers, maritime interests

MANILA — The Philippines must establish an expeditionary navy capable of protecting its seafarers and commercial vessels, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said Thursday, as the country moves to strengthen its maritime capabilities and revitalize its shipping industry.

Tedoro emphasized that a more robust naval presence is essential for securing Filipino mariners operating across international waters while the nation rebuilds its maritime sector. The push comes as policymakers seek to better harness the country's extensive maritime domain and the economic opportunities it presents.
