Philippines positioned for textile industry growth with abundant natural fibers

MANILA — The Philippines has the foundational elements needed to boost its textile industry, with adequate supplies of natural fibers and established market interest, officials said Tuesday.
The challenge lies in strengthening the country's processing infrastructure to convert raw materials into higher-value finished products, according to Arnold "Ali" Atienza, executive director of the Department of Agriculture's Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (DA-PhilFIDA).
Atienza emphasized that while the nation benefits from substantial natural fiber resources and demonstrated market demand, realizing the industry's full growth potential requires strategic investment in manufacturing capacity and technological capabilities. This would enable local producers to move beyond exporting raw materials toward capturing greater profit margins through finished textile goods.
The assessment underscores ongoing efforts by the DA to position the fiber and textile sector as a significant contributor to the country's economic development and rural employment.
