Philippines prioritizes fighter jet support systems over aircraft purchase

MANILA — The Department of Defense is maintaining its interest in acquiring multirole fighter aircraft, though procurement officials have signaled that establishing critical support systems takes priority in the modernization roadmap.

Defense Secretary Teodoro told lawmakers during a congressional budget hearing that the fighter jet acquisition plan "is still there," but underscored the importance of first securing radar systems, air-to-air refueling capabilities, and other essential infrastructure. Without these backbone systems in place, advanced aircraft would lack the operational support needed to function effectively.

The remarks reflect a strategic approach to military modernization that prioritizes building comprehensive defense capabilities rather than acquiring platforms in isolation.
