MANILA — The Philippines' expanding railway sector will likely demand up to 20,000 workers to support planned infrastructure projects, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr). The agency has ramped up workforce development through the Philippine Railways Institute (PRI), which has conducted training programs for nearly 5,000 railway personnel since its establishment four years ago.
The PRI provides specialized instruction in railway safety, operations, and maintenance across multiple skill levels and technical areas. This training initiative aims to build domestic expertise as the government pursues several major rail development projects designed to improve transportation connectivity nationwide.
The projected workforce requirement underscores the scale of the Philippines' railway modernization agenda. With significant infrastructure investments underway, the DOTr's early emphasis on worker preparation reflects efforts to ensure adequate staffing and operational readiness as new rail lines come online.
The Philippine Railways Institute continues expanding its curriculum and training capacity to meet anticipated demand from both public and private rail operators. Officials emphasized that systematic workforce development will be critical to the successful implementation and long-term sustainability of the country's rail network expansion plans.
