Philippines reports significant drop in leptospirosis infections
Leptospirosis cases in the Philippines declined sharply by 46 percent over two weeks in mid-September, signaling a potential slowdown in the disease surge that had gripped the nation.

MANILA — The Department of Health reported a substantial decrease in leptospirosis infections during the second half of September, recording 1,814 cases from September 10 to 23, compared to 3,340 cases in the previous two-week period ending September 9.
The 46 percent drop provides tentative evidence that the outbreak, which had accelerated through late August and early September, may be entering a declining phase. The downward trend comes as health authorities have intensified prevention and control measures across the country.
Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection transmitted through contact with contaminated water and animal urine, typically surges during the rainy season when flooding increases the risk of human exposure. The disease can cause severe complications including kidney failure and bleeding if left untreated.
While the recent decline is encouraging, health officials have urged continued vigilance and adherence to preventive measures. The DOH has stressed the importance of avoiding contact with floodwaters, maintaining proper hygiene, and seeking immediate medical attention for fever and other symptoms consistent with leptospirosis.
Further data in the coming weeks will be necessary to confirm whether the downward trend continues or if another spike may occur as seasonal conditions persist across the archipelago.
