Philippines seeks 20-year prison terms for illegal firearms possession
The Interior Department is pushing for stricter penalties on unregistered gun charges as part of efforts to reduce armed violence. The proposed measure would make illegal firearms possession a non-bailable offense with sentences of up to two decades.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla has proposed legislation to impose jail sentences of up to 20 years for charges related to unregistered firearms, in a fresh push to curb gun-related violence across the country.
Remulla cited concerns that current penalties for possession of illegal firearms are insufficient as a deterrent, particularly because offenders can post bail and avoid prolonged detention. Under existing law, individuals caught with unregistered weapons can be released on bail despite acquiring criminal records.
"The challenge with current regulations is that when someone is apprehended with illegal firearms, they can easily secure bail and walk free," Remulla said in remarks highlighting the loophole. The proposed measure aims to make such offenses non-bailable and impose mandatory lengthy prison terms.
The proposal reflects the government's continued focus on tackling the proliferation of loose firearms in communities nationwide. Officials argue that stricter penalties could serve as a stronger deterrent and help reduce the number of armed crimes committed across the Philippines.
The initiative is expected to be elevated to Congress for deliberation and potential passage into law.
