Philippines seizes 339 illegally trafficked wildlife specimens in eight months

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) announced that it has seized 339 illegally traded animals and exotic species nationwide between January and August this year, marking a significant enforcement action against wildlife trafficking networks.

According to DENR officials, the confiscated specimens included 220 birds, 97 reptiles, 31 amphibians, and other creatures. Among the seized animals were dangerous species such as venomous snakes alongside rare exotic fauna including the binturong, an Asian carnivore also known as a bearcats.

The agency did not provide additional details on the specific locations of the seizures or the individuals involved in the illegal trade. Wildlife trafficking remains a persistent problem in the Philippines, driven by domestic demand for exotic pets and international smuggling operations targeting rare species.

The DENR's enforcement efforts are part of broader regional initiatives to combat illegal wildlife trade, which threatens biodiversity and contributes to the depletion of endangered animal populations across Southeast Asia. The agency has not disclosed whether criminal charges have been filed in connection with the seized specimens.
