Philippines Sets Ambitious 85% Plastic Waste Reduction Target by 2040

MANILA — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has committed to reducing plastic pollution across the Philippines by 85 percent by 2040, marking an ambitious environmental milestone in the nation's battle against plastic waste.

The targets were established under the Philippine National Plastic Action Roadmap, a comprehensive policy framework launched recently to tackle one of the region's most pressing environmental challenges. The roadmap was developed through the National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP), a multistakeholder platform that brings together government agencies, private sector representatives, civil society organizations, and environmental advocates.

The initiative reflects growing recognition of the urgent need to address plastic contamination, which has become a critical issue in the Philippines and across Southeast Asia. The 85 percent reduction target encompasses efforts across the entire plastic value chain, from production and consumption to waste management and recycling.

Implementation of the roadmap will require coordinated action among manufacturers, retailers, consumers, and waste management authorities. The DENR is expected to work with local government units and private stakeholders to establish concrete mechanisms for achieving the 2040 goal, though specific implementation strategies and interim milestones remain under development.
