Philippines to Award 80% of Infrastructure Contracts by September

MANILA — The Department of Public Works and Highways will accelerate the award of infrastructure contracts in a bid to inject momentum into the Philippine economy, which has been weakened by a recent slowdown in construction activity.
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said Wednesday that 80 percent of all pending construction projects would be awarded by September. The official acknowledged that the economy is "really suffering" as procurement activity in the construction sector has declined following increased scrutiny of project processes.
The pledge represents a government effort to unlock stalled infrastructure spending and support economic expansion. Construction sector performance has become a key indicator of overall economic health, with project delays contributing to slower growth in recent quarters.
