Philippines to Build 13 New Pumping Stations to Combat Metro Manila Floods

MANILA — The Philippine government is moving forward with an infrastructure initiative aimed at alleviating the persistent flooding that plagues Metro Manila, with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. unveiling plans for 13 new pumping stations on Thursday.

Of the planned facilities, four will be newly constructed installations, while the remaining nine will represent upgrades or expansions of existing pump systems across the metropolitan area. The administration has set an ambitious timeline for implementation, with the majority of these pumping stations projected to enter service by the first quarter of 2027.

The announcement underscores the government's continued focus on addressing urban water management challenges that have long affected residents and businesses throughout the capital region. Flooding in Metro Manila has historically been triggered by heavy rainfall during the typhoon season and inadequate drainage infrastructure, prompting successive administrations to invest in hydraulic engineering solutions.
