The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) announced plans to request an Interpol Red Notice against Batangas 1st District Representative Leandro Leviste after a regional trial court in Makati issued an arrest warrant against him.
Leviste, whose whereabouts are believed to be in Germany, faces criminal charges that prompted the court order. The DILG said it would coordinate with the Philippine Center on Transnational Crimes to initiate the international alert through Interpol, which would alert law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and apprehend the fugitive lawmaker.
An Interpol Red Notice is a request for law enforcement authorities across member nations to locate and provisionally arrest an individual pending extradition or other legal proceedings. The mechanism is typically employed in cases involving individuals who have fled their home country to avoid prosecution.
The development marks an escalation in efforts to enforce the arrest warrant against the congressman, whose case has drawn public attention amid ongoing judicial proceedings in the Philippines.
