CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Government officials have appealed to media organizations to maintain strict safety protocols during coverage of the upcoming Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections, one of the region's most significant electoral events.
Executive Secretary Ralph Recto delivered the government's message during the opening of a three-day Safety and Security forum in Cagayan de Oro, stressing the importance of protecting journalists who will be documenting the September 14 polls across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
The appeal underscores growing concerns about journalist security in the conflict-affected region, where previous elections have occasionally been marked by tensions and violence. Officials emphasized that a free and responsible press is essential to ensuring the integrity and credibility of the electoral process.
Recto characterized the media's role during the elections as that of "fearless guardians of the vote," highlighting their responsibility to report accurately while taking necessary precautions to protect themselves and their teams in potentially volatile areas.
The government's call comes as media organizations prepare extensive coverage plans for what is expected to be a closely watched election that will shape the region's political landscape.
