Philippines warns of lahar danger as monsoon rains drench volcano regions

MANILA — Authorities warned Saturday of heightened risk from volcanic sediment flows and muddy streamflow in drainage areas surrounding two of the Philippines' most monitored volcanoes as persistent monsoon rains show no signs of abating.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) cautioned that the ongoing southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, poses significant danger of triggering lahar — a destructive mix of volcanic material and water that can flow rapidly down slopes and drainage systems.

Residents in communities near Mount Pinatubo and Taal Volcano have been advised to remain vigilant and monitor weather conditions closely. Rivers and waterways in proximity to both volcanoes are particularly vulnerable to debris flow during periods of sustained heavy rainfall.

The agency has maintained close observation of both volcanic systems and pledged to issue updated advisories as conditions warrant. Authorities urged local government units to prepare evacuation protocols and ensure public preparedness in flood-prone areas adjacent to volcanic slopes.
